The islands history (pirates island)

Koh Phangan (also spelled: Ko Pha Ngan) is the island of freedom. A relaxed oasis in the Gulf of Thailand with some of the best beaches found in the whole South Eastern region of the country. Located about 100 km from the coast of Southern Thailand's Surat Thani Province and about 15 km from the famous resort island of Koh Samui.

Koh Phangan is the largest of Samui's neighboring islands, with an area of 168 square km. Over 70% of its total area is mountains and tropical forest. The lowlands are beaches and coconut fields..

Koh Phangan was once a favourite place for King Rama V. He visited the island fourteen times between 1888 and 1909. Historians and archaeologists believe that the first group who migrated to Koh Phangan Thailand were Sea-Gypsies (Pigmy, Semung and Proto-Malay), who traveled by boat from the Malay Peninsula

Koh Phangan has always been a place for relaxation and reflection. healing & spiritual arts are integral to the island’s history, the numerous tempels are testament to this. Koh Phangan now has some very nice spa resorts on the scale of our sister island Koh Samui; there are plenty of retreat centres, meditation schools and secret hideaways where one can find peace and space for learning in harmony with nature.

Peace and well being

Ang Thong National Marine Park

"The Golden Bowl of the Gulf of Thailand" is 25 kilomaters west of Koh Samui. It has been enlisted as the second national marine park since 1980. The park is composed of 42 islands which Koh Pa Luay, Koh Wua Taa Lub, Koh Mae Kon, Koh Hin Dub, Koh Nai Put, and Koh Tai Plao form parts of. The archipelago consists of tropical rainforests, wildlife, deserted beaches and massive rock formations. There is good snorkelling, diving, hiking and even camping on some of the islands. Many people regard sea kayaking as the best way to explore the area.

Scuba diving and snorkeling

Good visibility and extensive coral reefs have created good surroundings for diving of Koh Phangan. A little North of the island, you will find Sail Rock, at the right time of year you maybe lucky, and see whale sharks. If you want to obtain an international diving certificate (PADI etc.), "there are many schools and instructors with genuine knowledge and experience"
